Interviews from Pam, Q Baby, Bernadet
Why did you choose this facility?
Pam: Reputation, most of the staff is in recovery themselves. Variety of programs (grief counseling, PTSD, dual diagnosis, stress mgmt) were very helpful when I left and went home & back to work. They line you up with an alumni contact. They let you know you are always welcome to call them if you need help - and I had to on 3 different occasions during my 1st year of sobriety. Once an alum of Hazelden, you always will be welcome there for the 7pm lectures, reunions...very peaceful, respectful place. They've saved many, many lives - mine included
Q Baby: Because of the Hazelden reputation, the freedom of the treatment model and the beautiful Naples location.
Bernadette: Reputation

Tell us about the experience - was it positive or negative?
Pam: positive
Q Baby: Amazing! True healing of the mind, body and spirit. The condos are very cool and there is lots of freedom to step outside of the facility and practice positive recovery behaviour while in treatment. Lots of fellowship time on the perch and deck! Very safe and special place!
Bernadette: It was for the most part positive. There were some ladies that monopulized groups and were very stuck up towards others. These women were professionals such as nursing instructors and a psychologist who just "knew everything". I felt my counselor cared but by body actions just didn't relate to me, she was going thru the motions. When I was discharged my counsler avoided me and I was upset as I had no ride home and it was a winter storm and she did not care, just wanted me to leave. When you are discharged it is cold and "you are otta there like now" I was not ready to leave and I do not believe the staff did their job to keep me there. Probably becuase I did not have money for the lodge and the extended care unit. My insurance would have paid for another two weeks but I was not worth it financially to them. If you have money you are treated like royalty. I tripped over a bed corner as they stick out and hurt two of my fingers as they bent way backwards. They were swollen and brusied. My right knee also hurt and bruised. I filled out a report with the nurse and believe it or not they did not have splints for fingers as the nurse thought it may be broken. No one checked up on me from management. My counsler did after 3 days. Apparently they don't care. Today I am still having pain in my fingers and suffer from swelling . I also suffer from plaque psoriasis and ordered new creams and shampoos WITHOUT my consent. I had brought what my Dermatologist perscribed for me. Someone was "offended" by my skin, nothing on the face mind you and I covered my arms and legs. They thought they could catch it. The medical staff let me down rather than teach the person who complained /was offended they abused my patient right to be involved in changes in treatment. Some clients get to do whatever and rules not inforced like missing group , meals activities daily. Why are they there? They take up space when others could use it. The staff in general was great . There is a psychologist on staff who is really phoney and just a poor listener and needs to go back to school for communication skills and interaction. Only discussed what she wanted.

Do you feel the program was successful?
Pam: yes
Q Baby: Yes!! A different approach to treatment. Everyone is accountable fo themselves. Excellent spiritual program and counselors! They really know how to treat addiction!
Bernadette: In many ways yes. Recovery is on going. Life long.

What advice would you give somebody considering going to this facility?
Pam: go if you can.
Q Baby: GO! If you are serious about recovery this is the place to be. This was my last chance. I wallked in broken and full of shame. I now have fully surrendered and accept that I am a good person with a very bad disease. My motivation for sobriety is higher than ever and I realize I cant do this alone. Thanks Hazelden FL from the bottom of my heart!
Bernadette: Get the facts up front about your insurance coverage and ask questions, any question so there are no surprises. Always, make sure you are involved in your care and always make sure you take advantage of everything. Hazelden does not tell about outside services such as Equine Therapy and I believe there is art classes. BuT they do not offer to everyone, seems like only those with money.
