Interview from Gar
Why did you choose this facility?
Garth: I chose this facility because it was recommended by a therapist who specializes in advising parents and families of addicts which treatment options they have.

Tell us about the experience - was it positive or negative?
Garth: While attending the facility I had very mixed feelings about it. My mother who had sent me there also had very mixed feelings. The school options as far as high school goes were not very good especially considering many of the students come into the program about halfway through their senior year. The work was easy and not enough of a priority to the staff who would even take away your ability to use the computers, the only way school was done, if you got in trouble. My therapist was abusive, abrasive, self centered, inexperienced, and most of all she had no respect for the concept of confidentiality. they encouraged recreations yet on weekends there were only a few choices of activities you could do and they were not exciting or interesting. The staff for the most part were not attentative and seemed to have very little experience or ability in working with adolescence.

Do you feel the program was successful?
Garth: I do not feel that the program was successful in any area but independent living. All in all it seemed to be the programs only real focus. Chores seemed to be the basis for everything in the program such as rewards and freedom. Therapy was not successful because besides 2 female tharapists there were none that seemed to show any concern about anything except keeping you in the program.Basically me and my mother both feel that the program did very little for me or any one else and was without a doubt more concerned with money then anything else.

What advice would you give somebody considering going to this facility?
Garth: If I was to talk to someone directly that was planning to go to this facility or planning on sending their child to this facility I would say that there are many rehabilitation centers throughout the United States with similar programs to the one Northstar offers, and I think that many of them if not all of them are better options especially considering the high ratio of cost to treatment that is the northstar program. I would personally never send my child to Northstar and my mother actually asked me to do these reviews in order to help her warn other parents of this program that we both beleive must have seen better days.
