Interviews from Destiknight, AnnaMari
Why did you choose this facility?
Destiknight: I checked myself in. And it is one of the best
AnnaMarina: No other 30 day residential program was recommended. I have yet to find another for the greater Kansas CIty metro area. Family demanded a full 30 days of treatment.

Tell us about the experience - was it positive or negative?
Destiknight: Very Very positive, caring staff and counselors. Very free and relaxing actually
AnnaMarina: Negative. I needed relief through withdrawals, and was told I'd "be less likely to use again if I suffered". I'm a chronic pain patient. This was paid for by my medical insurance. I expected some modicum of medical treatment for symptoms. The only "relief" offered was a blood pressure drug called clonidine, which dropped my BP to 70/30 at the lowest, though that was only checked after I finally fainted. I needed a place to be away from the ability to get prescription opiates until the withdrawals had passed, I had already decided to never use them again. I didn't really need or like the 12 step indoctrination OR the confrontational therapy ("Hot Seat") methods used there. It broke people down more when they were already broken down quite enough.

Do you feel the program was successful?
Destiknight: Yes, I learned alot from it, and I am now attending N/A meetings and following the 12 steps
AnnaMarina: I was successful. I made the decision to never use again, and to leave it in the past. No 12 step program would have helped me. Yes, they housed me and fed me. Many there were very nice. My insurance is still trying to determine how the fact that I was treated here was able to be found by other doctors, however.

What advice would you give somebody considering going to this facility?
Destiknight: I would highly recommend Valley Hope, it is the best rehab center I have visited
AnnaMarina: If 12 step programs are for you, or if you're simply not bothered by endless examination of your "character defects", then it's not all bad. Little help is given in detox there, if any, for the accompanying discomfort. If a 30 day program is required for you and you can't travel, it's not the end of the world. Otherwise, RUN to what few non 12 step anesthesia assisted detoxes there are in the US.
