This is a rehab facility but it is important to know that this is in a prison setting. In other words, you will only find yourself in this facility as an alternative to jail or prison. So the environment is very structured, but you will get help that will really help you out if you really want to treat your addiction.

Tell us about the experience - was it positive or negative?
CleanBoy7: Positive in that the counseling and tools for awareness of addiction(s) have been abig help. Negative in that the 'system', as it is can be manipulated, and some of the treatments are outdated.
South: It was positive in that I don't want to have to go through it again. It was long enough to spend some time thinking about the information given from an angle different than A.A./N.A. meetings

Do you feel the program was successful?
CleanBoy7: VERY!
South: Well for me it was not.Fear, in a 1000 different forms is a major problem for someone like me.I felt trapped in the middle of staff and inmates. Between the unit itself and the half-way house after, I think the punishment for 3 wrong choices in one situation are 2 severe for people who are there because they're not good at it. I think it's geared towards impatience not tolerance. Anyway,there are things about it that over all are beneficial to those who've never had to answer to anyone or never had any structure in their lives.

What advice would you give somebody considering going to this facility?
CleanBoy7: You are gonna mind some1. Use the tools and counselors. Great staff in counseling department.
South: I think the best advice is Knowing Before you get there is A) this is a unit of TDCJ.B) the counceling is by your peers, not staff.There are short periods with them like a 1/2 hour once a wk and small groups with your councelor and their caseload inside the pod twice a week.(C) MOST Important; make sure that changing is what you want.You will have to decide if your going to continue to side with the law or the lawless. Also you will be involved Ever Day in a confrontation circle either from the inside or out, to listen, or to confront someone or be confronted about your negetive behaviors as defined by major and minor rules.EVERYONE participates. If you go, go All the way!!!
