Rachel: because the guy that answered the phone was very helpful
Nan: She has tried to get in Unity before on the recommendation of some friends that had been there and liked it. When Unity checked her insurance last March, 2012 they said her insurance didn't cover there. She went to several other facilities over the past year located in Florida like Stepping Stones, Recovery Place, Water Shed, Transistion to name a few. Finally, in Nov 2012, Unity accepted her insurance.
Josh: After my third ER scare and seeing the look on my Mom's face I knew I needed help. My mom called a couple different places she found online (probably google search) and unity rehab took her insurance. When she called she also spoke to a guy named David who was really helpful and seemed to care about getting me help. I actually got to see him a few times after meetings and tell him that if it wasn't for him being patient and actually caring that I got help - I might be dead.
NJ Mom: I was told me son needed to be there for 2 days before he could be moved to Changing Tides

Interviews from VG, Lou, Winnie, Rachel, Nan, Josh, NJ M
Why did you choose this facility?
VG: I chose Unity, it was first on the list when I googled it! Not a good thing.
Lou: internet said it was one of the top 5 in the state
Winnie: It was on the internet, listed as a holistic recovery center. We called for our son, I spoke with a girl named Mindy. She sold "the package" as to what a wonderful treatment center it was. How my son was going to get better, and would love it there so much, he probably would want to move to Fla.

Tell us about the experience - was it positive or negative?
VG: My husband never even got to Unity, their practices are unprofessional and unethical. They lied to me right from the start and then tried to talk my husband who was in detox from transferring to another facility. And they talked trashed about the new facility my husband was being transferred to. Very unprofessional and I now know why, you can't even find one review on them on the internet! Wonder why, cause it's a scam. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Lou: NEGIATIVE My daughters therapist never returns my phone calls I think all the centers on the east coast give each other kick backs. The residential area is very weird it's in a neighborhood and the facility is on the top of Bank of America They dropped my dauhter off at the hospital because she punched a door out of anger and left her there with no phone to call anyone to pick her up.
Winnie: In the beginning we thought it was going to be a good place. Mindy " the marketing" girl sold us on it, told us how wonderful the people were. My husband and daughter toured the facility while my son was in Sunrise detox. Mindy explained that the place was being refurbished, and our son was going to have the new building. We explained that he would need intensive therapy, and they promised that he would get it. The first room that they tried to give him, had bags of garbage in the closet and ants everywhere. The place where he ended up was with 5 other guys, one batchroom. Dirty, bedbugs. The councelor never called us, we had been leaving messages for Mindy, as she was the only contact number that we had, in 8 days never heard from a counselor. My son got pulled out of group and got yelled at for having his "co- dependant" family taking up too much marketing time by calling too much. I had left 2 messages for his counselor,Nicky, who I didn't even know who it was until the day before. I called her to tell her my son was in "crisis mode". When I did speak with her, she promised that she would talk to my son right away. She then sent me an email saying that the clients had already gone home, it was 5:00 on Friday, and she would speak to him on Monday. No effort to go to him to see if he was OK, after hours, can't take up their precious weekend. They don't care about the clients, only care about getting them in so they can collect the insurance. We pulled him out of treatment.
Rachel: NEGATIVE there were unethical things going on...a lot of sex ,people going out and bringing back drugs and alcohol and letting them stay at the facility after endangering those trying to work on their recovery. letting staff member bullying the patients there. employees having sex with patients, staff member not returning phone calls to loved ones...I can go on!!!! NOT PROFESSIONAL at all
Nan: My daughter is still there and it is now Jan 2013, currently and has been there since November, 2012. She was in detox, then to Unity inpatient, then to their outpatient treatment. The only complaint she has had is that it is unorganzied at times. She just relased in the transitions house, the staff at Unity were on top of it, quickly got her help, and back to treatment. I feel they did a much better job in caring for her then any of the other places she has been since this started 1 and 1/2 years ago.
Josh: POSITIVE. Everyday is still a struggle. But I went in knowing I NEEDED help and they gave me tools to use to get through today. Just one day at a time. The biggest reason it was successful for me though was because I WANTED help. If I hadn't been there because I wanted to get better it would not have worked for me.
NJ Mom: Very negative. I was asked to pay $750/day for my son to spend time in the detox unit. He had come from another facility and had no substances in his system, but they wanted to stabilize him on his meds before he was admitted to their Changing Tides program. He arrives at 5pm on Thursday. At 9pm, he had still not been assessed. They were not happy he was acting agitated. I told them I would be agitated too if they made me wait 4 hours. The next day, I was told he was not a good fit for Changing Tides and I would need to find somewherer else for him by Friday at 5pm, or I would need to pay another $1500. Friday morning, I couldn't get the clinical director to return my calls to tell me how my son was doing. I finally heard on someone at 2:30 pm and was again told I had a 5:00 deadline. I have dealt with a lot of different programs in the past 3 years and this is the worst experience I've had. I agree with other reviewers, they are extremely profit driven. That's all that matters. The well being of the client in not at all important.

Do you feel the program was successful?
VG: My husband didn't even attend Unity, very untrustworthy staff from the beginning, I think they have something with Sunrise Detox. The staff there too was very unprofessional.
Lou: not sure yet. I DONT THINK SHE GOT WHAT WE PAID FOR
Winnie: NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rachel: NO
Nan: I believe it has helped although the treatment is not over yet and she has a ways to go, I believe Unity has been more helpful then most. The staff has always been helpful, friendly, and support to her and to me (Mom). Her counselor and the techs were all very nice helpful and kind to both of us.
Josh:
NJ Mom: No. I would not recommend. I believe profit is their only motive.

What advice would you give somebody considering going to this facility?
VG: Do not even consider going to this joke of a business. When you call, a guy name Fidel answers his cell phone, (that should have been my first clue), I was just happy my husband said he would go to to rehab. This business preys on the vulnerability of people going through a really hard time and try to scam people.
Lou: visit it first. And get ALL the information upfront. They are cheap and you get what you pay for.
Winnie: Don't go!!! I wish I saw this website before we sent our son there. Our son is now bitter about any inpatient treatment.
Rachel: DONT GO !!!!!!
Nan: I think Unity is a good facility and would recommend it, they have different levels of care available and try to work with you and your insurance to get the maximum coverage. I think that the difference is not so much the facility but the willingness of the person to make the changes necessary to get off drugs. If your not ready to do what it takes, then you should not waste your time or money going to any facility, this is what I have learned over the past year of trying to help my daughter.
Josh: If you are thinking about going you are one step closer to recovery - but you have to make the call. I have not been to any other rehab clinics so I don't have anything to compare it to.
NJ Mom: They are going to be all over you if they think you have good insurance that they can extort for profit. Once that runs out, they will have no further interest in helping you, unless you can provide the full 20k a month.
